Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a wide pan over medium-low heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 30–35 minutes until soft, golden, and caramelized. Do not rush; avoid high heat.
  3. Add garlic during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
  4. Deglaze the pan with balsamic vinegar, scraping up any brown bits. Add a splash of water if needed for a sauce-like consistency.
  5. Blend (optional): For a smooth sauce, transfer to a blender and puree.
  6. Season to taste, and serve warm.
